Mission trip brings quilter to Costa Rica

Linda Hertensteiner has about two dozen sisters, and they all live in Costa Rica.

Not related by blood, they are bound through their craft, quilting, which Hertensteiner helped teach them during a trip to the Central American country earlier this year.

She represented the Green Country Quilters Guild, which participates in charitable activities throughout the year. But this is the first time the guild has adopted, so to speak, a quilt guild in another country.

"It was really her idea," said guild President Vesta Van Trease about Hertensteiner. "This is her baby."

Hertensteiner has been quilting for about 20 years, and she teaches sewing to intellectually disabled students at Pathways Adult Learning Center, a Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian ministry dedicated to enhancing the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities.

The church sends members on medical team missions to Central America, including Nicaragua and, most recently, Costa Rica, Hertensteiner explained. Her husband, Dr. George Hertensteiner, was a member of the team.
