Crushing peppermints??  I have a friend -- no really -- that puts the peppermints in a triple layer bag, puts that in another bag and then puts the bag under her car tire and runs over the bag a number of times.  She says it works beautifully - and she uses a LOT of peppermint during Christmas.  Caution was to be sure you get the air out of the bag so it doesn't burst. 

I think the hammer idea is good. I use the double bag and the side of the meat cleaver.  Only purpose I ever found for the thing since no bad guys have broken into my house  Grin Grin Grin

The car??  how funny!!  A good one for Shirley - using the NEW car!! 
We did double bag and used the hammer but it wasn't  working that well - even with a towel, the bag broke up more.  Well, we made do, but I'm going to try maybe my little chopper when I get home - I'm on a quest now to find a better way.
