Paper Maps and the iPhone work for me.  I print out directions using Google Maps.

Cindy we REALLY love ours.. it is a Garmin that came out in Triple AAA a few yrs back.. We rarely use a map, but Gregg is very good with directions and always looks at google earth before we go.

I would recommend you get one with the ability to download changes. New bridges and roads won't show up down the road, but it's rare we have a problem.. and we drive all over the united states

When I was looking for a GPS a few years ago, Garmin was the one that was more user friendly at the time.  So that is what I bought.  You can download new maps on-line.  When I did that, the cost of downloading was either $60 US for a one time download or approx. $130 US for the ability to download up to 4 times per yr for the life of the GPS.  I paid the $130 and now periodically go on-line and update my maps, esp. before going on a trip.  Whatever model you get, I would make sure that you can download maps and investigate the cost of downloading maps.

DH has the GPS, prints MapQuest, AND carries an Atlas in the car. None of them AGREE. That's what bugs me. He asks me to read MQ, I do and he looks at the map anyway. What's up with that? I keep my mouth shut in the car now. I might get an IPod to listen to talking books when riding with him. Hmmmm.
