Think it might have been the Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blighton.  Don't know if I actually finished it I know I picked it up lots and started it.  I didn't really enjoy reading until after I left school.  Know I love it and read and reread books all the time.  It is amazing how things change.

The first book I remember reading was one called Harold and his Purple Crayon.  The one I still have is A Little Golden Book about and black and white kitten named Socks.

I'm sure I read many books before this one, but the first one I remember being passionate about, being unable to put down, was E.B. White's Charlotte's Web.  As a young girl who's ideas were often dismissed as childish, I identified with Fern.  As a shy kid who didn't always fit in, I identified with Wilber, and doesn't everyone want a friend like Charlotte?  Doesn't everyone hope to find a friend who would make sacrifices for your happiness?  Doesn't everyone want a friend who will help you to appreciate your own beauty?  Oh what a wonderful story!

I don't remember the name of the first book I read, but what I do remember is that I was in the 1st grade and I had to put the book on reserve.  When I finally was able to take the book out of the library,  every time I read it I started at the beginning again.  So guess what!  I never finished the book but I love feeling the pages - it was glossy.  Wish I remembered more.  Would love to win Marie's books!

I remember the thrill of the Bookmobile coming down our street since we didn't have a public library anywhere close. I STILL remember where the series of books about Betsy and Tacy by Maude Lovelace was located. It was so much fun to introduce my own daughters to that series when they were 5 or 6. Now I have two little granddaughters who will be able to understand and enjoy them in a couple of years!

I already posted about my first book that I remember reading "Thorns and Orange Blossoms" but just had to tell you that I am enjoying reading "Sisters Choice" by Emily and also love her quilt instruction books. I want to add them all to my own quilty library!!  Try as I might, I cannot recall reading a specific children's book but I do remember learning to read with the "Dick and Jane" series. I remember one of my daughter's favorite books as a child was a Golden book called "Little Mommy". I can recite that thing almost by heart........"this is my house and I am the mommy, my children are Annabelle, Betsy and Bonny........"  We love to get out the copy and read it even now. It was published in 1967 and the picture of "mommy and daddy" then was already a thing of the past. Love the story anyway!

My godmother was a kindergarten teacher, so some of the first books I read on my own were textbooks (for 1st or 2nd graders).  I remember reading Curious George and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.  I still love both of those books.

I've always loved reading! I remember reading Helen Keller in a book that was given to me that also had some sign language in the back.  I also absolutely loved The Boxcar Children!

I recall having quite a collection of Little Golden Books, and I do recall reading...actually reading...Doctor Dan the Bandage Man to my brother and sister. In 1st grade I was one of three girls in the "advanced" reading group, so during Quiet Time after lunch, Mrs. Morris had the 3 of us stand at the front of the class and read aloud to the rest of the class...a skill that continues to serve me well as a radio announcer!

Oh, how I used to love the day each month when we received our Scholastic Book Club flyers. I got to buy one book a month. I remember Pippi Longstocking, and there was another book I enjoyed about a young orphan brother and sister who were adopted by a farm couple. I can't recall the title.

One of the ladies at our church, who had only sons, gave me her collection of Bobsey Twins books, and I devoured those.  I loved The Borrowers. And there was one called Percival Rides the Time Wave. I don't know why certain stories stick with me after all these years, but those books do.

My first memories are of Mother Goose. I was fascinated with the picture of her on the back of a flying goose! And, I still remember lots of the Mother Goose rhymes and am fascinated that so many of lthem originated in English history.

I learned to read in First Grade with Dick and Jane, so those were the first ones I read by myself. I read all the Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins and Cherry Ames was my absolute favorite.

The two favorite stories I loved that I remember my mom reading were a Golden Book, Doctor Dan the Bandage Man and then a collection of stories with a light blue cover called simply Lots of Stories. My favorite story in that book was, Down the Chipmunk Hole, about a girl who accidentally drops her doll down a chipmunk hole and the adventures the doll has with the chipmunks. As I remember it the chipmunks were very nice and took very good care of the doll. I just might still have that book. I need to look for it so I can re-read that story because I don't remember how the story ended.

Now I always have a book going, sometimes more than one. I'm checking my library for Marie's books.

I think the first books I read on my own were The Bobbsey Twins series.  I loved those books.  I moved on to the Nancy Drew mysteries.  Today I am a regular visitor to the public library - I usually check out 10 - 15 books at one time.  I know, I still find time to quilt!  Kiss

I remember Dick and Jane. I was in the 1st grade and was so excited to be able to learn how to read. I threw a fit, banging my head on the floor when I came home that day, because I hadnt learned how to read. All I learned was sounding out the alphabet. The next time we were sitting in a circle and the teacher was trying to teach us to read by sounding out the words in the book. I was listening, and looking at the book and suddenly, the nickel dropped!! I realized that the letters we learned and the sounds they made, made sense to me!! I started reading almost immediately. I loved reading so much, they couldnt keep me from the books. I was reading 3rd grade readers before I finished the 1st grade. It opened a whole new world to me. I will never forget that moment of realization.

The first book I read?  Probably was one of the Dick and Jane books. I remember when I was in third or fourth grade, one summer the librarian told me that I had to put some books back, I couldn't finish all of those in two weeks. Sad  My mom spoke up for me and told her that I could. Smiley  The Bobbsey Twins were my favorite of all time when I was young, then the Flicka Books, Nancy Drew, etc.  It started a love of reading that I passed down to both of my children.  And even now, I can't go to sleep at night unless I can read a chapter or two of a book.  More often, it turns out to be five or six chapters and two hours (or more) have slipped away.  Books are a way of just losing yourself in the characters as if you're there yourself.  Marie, thank you for the gift of words that you have, and for sharing it with all of us.

BTW, I just saw on a website that they've come out with the fabric for The Pokey Little Puppy.  Now I know just what to make my future grandchild if my daughter ever gets busy!  It was her very favorite book to be read at bedtime.
